Portugal outranks the UK for safety, pollution, cost of living and quality of life..
The 2021 mid-year update from Numbeo has revealed that Portugal is safer, less polluted and more affordable than the UK. For overall quality of life, Portugal ranked 20th in the world, while the UK placed 24th.
In safety terms, Portugal was well ahead of the UK, with the countries ranking 22nd and 58th respectively. Numbeo’s pollution index, meanwhile, saw Portugal ranked as the 17th least polluted country on the planet. The UK’s pollution levels saw it take 28th place. Portugal is also less crowded than the UK, with 110 people per km2, compared to the UK’s 281, according to World Population Review.
“Portugal has so much to offer that it makes a superb choice as both a holiday destination and a place to live fulltime. The climate and abundance of greenspace are ideally suited to an outdoor lifestyle, particularly in the Algarve, which enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year. And the pace of life has so much to offer in terms of mental health and wellbeing benefits. There are so many factors that contribute to the superior quality of life here.” Alda Filipe, Sales and Marketing Director, Kronos Homes
At Palmares Ocean Living & Golf, located in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the sparkling waters of the Alvor estuary in the Western Algarve, homeowners can enjoy the very best of the Portuguese lifestyle. The resort has been built to forge an exceptional harmony with the natural landscape, with a construction density of just 5.7%. The combination of ocean and golf landscapes delivers a sense of oneness with the natural world, for the ideal escape.
The facilities at Palmares Ocean Living & Golf have been designed to provide everything that holidaymakers could wish for. The 27-hole golf course was designed by renowned American architect Robert Trent Jones Jr and annual membership for two is included with the purchase of every home. There’s a brand new, spectacular Clubhouse, designed by Pritzker Award-winning RCR Arquitectes, and the new Al Sud fine-dining restaurant, with Michelin-starred Executive Chef Louis Anjos in residence, which has been fully booked since it opened in June 2021.
In terms of homes, buyers at Palmares have plenty of choice, ranging from land plots to luxury golf- and ocean-front turnkey villas designed by RCR Arquitectes, the show villa for which has just been completed. Prices start from €780,000 for land plots and €3.4 million for turnkey villas.
The resort has attracted a wide variety of nationalities when it comes to home ownership. At the Apartments, Americans account for 22% of sales at Palmares, while Portuguese buyers make up 19%, as do British buyers. They’re followed by German, Czech and Azerbaijani buyers (all at 7%), with buyers from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Sweden and Switzerland accounting for 4% of sales each. The result is a wonderfully mixed international community, complemented by a sizeable proportion of domestic buyers.
“Portugal’s strong ranking for quality of life says it all. This is an idyllic location in which to own a holiday property. The scenery and the sunshine support healthy living, while characterful lively towns such as Lagos – a 10-minute drive from Palmares – provide everything you could wish for in terms of shops, restaurants, culture and leisure facilities. Portugal’s ranking is certainly well-deserved.” Alda Filipe, Sales and Marketing Director, Kronos Homes
The Western Algarve is fast becoming the new trendy place to buy property on the Algarve. British buyers are looking for the next big thing, areas that are untouched and ripe for discovery a bit more distant from the traditional and sometimes over developed areas of the Golden Triangle.
The potential capital appreciation in these new developments is not lost on these affluent buyers. Solid and consistent investment in the development of these areas of the Western Algarve – and the Palmares resort in particular – is providing an extremely positive long-term outlook.
